Writer in Residence (W-i-R) (Astoria, Oregon)

I was the 2016 recipient of the Writer in Residence. The program was originally run through Astoria Visual Arts (AVA), but is now housed with The Astoria Writers Guild. I was awarded a studio space for 4 months which was on the upper floor of Pier 11. It was a huge honor and a great experience. From this residency, I produced a book of poetry and hosted a Book Fair at the Blue Scorcher Bakery. Click HERE to read an article about being the first writer to participate in this program.

Sou’Wester Arts Teaching Residency (Seaview, Washington)

In the summer of 2019, I completed a “Sou’Wester Arts Teaching Residency.” I had so much fun teaching zine, mini-memoir and writing through list making. I loved staying at the lodge complete with ’80s nostalgia including visits to the nearby IGA to remind me of my childhood. I watched E.T. on VHS and worked on some illustrations for a community zine project.

Word & Image – The Hoffman Center (Manzanita, Oregon)

In 2017, I was selected to participate in the “Word and Image” project run by the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita, Oregon. Twelve writers and artists were selected and randomly paired. The concept is based off of the “ekphrasis” device where an artist paired with a poet creates a piece of art in response to a poem. At the end of the process, there was a reception, a reading and a small magazine produced. In this case, I was the poet and Robin Lieberman was the artist.

Community Zine Projects

Zine Series #1: “Wasted on Facebook”

“Wasted on Facebook” was a collaboration with Astoria writer Kaisa Saavalinen and a community of local writers. Writers reflected on the theme of growing up. While I had a studio at the Astoria Studio Collective, Kaisa and I were neighbors. We decided to create a community zine together and invite a group of local writers to contribute. The zine was printed and assembled by Tapiola Makery Press. An opening reading was held during Art Walk in the fall of 2019.

Zine Series #2: “Barbie”

The “Barbie” zine was a second collaboration with Astoria writer Kaisa Saavalinen. A community of local writers responded to the them of “Barbie.” It was created for the July 2023 Art Walk. Zine was printed and assembled by Grand Old Girl Studio and Tapiola Makery Press.
